Often members find that they are ready to move into
supported or independent
employment, and Gateway House staff stands ready to assist in
any way. Staff members work with members in all aspects of
securing supported employment positions- from helping with resumes, interviewing skills,
training, transportation, etc. Approximately 30% of members who participated
in the transitional employment program have moved on to
supported or independent employment; however, it is difficult to track this
progression since many members become inactive at Gateway House
because of their full-time employment. Regardless of the
statistics, it is important to remember that many of these members
were once labeled unemployable, but through the confidence gained
by the transitional employment program, along with the support of
Gateway House members and staff, success can be achieved.
“Sometimes I never thank you enough, Gateway House, for what
you have done for me. You’ve let me work on TEP when no one else
thought I could work. And you’ve helped me find my own job. I am
not dependent on a disability check any longer. I get my benefits
from my job! Thank you for all your support and for always
believing in me!” Fletcher Johnson

Program. He was employed independently by Winn Dixie for twelve
years and is now employed full-time at Furman University.
