Before coming to
Gateway House, many of our members never dared to dream of living on
their own. Having an apartment, preparing meals, and keeping their
own schedules were not things people suffering from mental illness
were supposed to be able to do. Realizing the need for housing for
the mentally ill, Gateway House has made a commitment to do
everything possible to assist members in their search for safe,
decent, and affordable housing.
After joining the
clubhouse and participating in the day program, those members who
need independent housing are offered assistance in moving into
homes of their own. Gateway House has a total of 72 apartments
available including the Earle Street
Apartments, owned and operated by Gateway House, and Gateway
Apartments and Portals, which are HUD projects managed by Gateway
House. Additionally, Gateway House owns and operates Buncombe
Place, a 13-unit apartment complex that offers supported housing
for members who need on-site support. The on-site staff person
provides the extra assistance some members may need with daily
challenges such as medication reminders, grocery shopping, cleaning,
etc. Knowing that such a person is looking out for their best
interest is extremely comforting to the members and their families.
When the time comes for
a member to move into an apartment, Gateway House staff and members
assist the person in selecting the apartment, making deposits,
obtaining furniture and food, and in making the actual move. Staff
commitment is evident in the 24-hour on call service available for
all Gateway House members. All of the services offered at Gateway
House become vital to members living on their own as they gain
confidence and face both daily challenges and victories.
"It took my breath
away when I was asked if I wanted to move into an apartment. I
really didn’t think it would happen for me." Claude Ellison
