While mental illness often disrupts the course
of formal education, it does not diminish intellectual abilities,
nor does it destroy the desire to grow and learn and understand.
Still, the educational environment can be intimidating to those it
no longer includes. To help members feel comfortable attending
classes at local colleges, adult education programs and career
training centers, Gateway House offers Supported Education. Rather
than providing in-house classes, we encourage members to enroll in
existing educational programs in the community, and we support
their efforts by helping them secure transportation, obtain
financial aid, access counseling services, and meet all admission
and attendance requirements. In addition, each participant is
paired with a Gateway House member or staff member who serves as a
mentor, helping fill out applications, choose a curriculum, and
set realistic career goals. Members count on their mentors for the
support they need, from accompanying them to class to providing
advice and encouragement. Realistic education goals, along with
the tools and support needed, offer members an incredible
opportunity to succeed.
